I have spent almost a week to figure out the BIG Q about choosing the right domain for a website from Search Engine Optimization point. I must say its pretty confusing when you have options in other TLDs or extensions and are better than the famous .coms. I studied a lot during the period. Big time analysis work was done on net, which led me to get on to a conclusion.

Here is what I found out, though some may not agree.

1. .com is the big boss. At least from global perspective, .com supercedes all other famous extensions.
2. .gov and .edu are better then .com from SEO point of view but they are hard to get.
3. For specific reasons e.g. for business go in for .biz, for area specific websites who have clientele in a particular area go in for country specific domains e.g. .in for India and .us for USA.
4. Get .com even if you have to use dashes “-”.
5. Short domains are the best ones.
6. Choose domain having your keywords in it.

Though some may disagree on getting domains with “-” , as a simple and straight domain like getbestdomain.com carry more weightage but when u cant get such a domain, in my suggestion you should go in for something like get-best-domain.com, (If you are targeting a global clientele or visitors) rather than going for getbestdomain.biz etc.
For a country specific visitors go in for different domain extensions like .in, .ky etc.
